How to survive Valentine’s Day single

How to survive Valentine’s Day single

Valentine's Day single

Get through Valentine’s Day single without resorting to drowning your sorrows thanks to these coping strategies from Jo Middleton

How do you feel about spending Valentine’s Day single?

If you’re single through choice and quite happy with that status, then it’s not a big deal. But, if you’d rather be in a relationship, Valentine’s Day can feel like undergoing torture. And you can’t escape. Everywhere you look there’s a teddy bear holding a red satin heart, proclaiming its love for someone or other.

But fear not! It doesn’t have to be that way.

Here are a few ideas to help you turn Valentine’s Day into an altogether less harrowing experience:

Turn your jealousy into pity

Instead of sobbing quietly to yourself when you look at displays of overpriced chocolates, see them for what they actually are – just overpriced chocolates. Think of all those poor people having to pay £10 for a box of truffles that would normally be half that price, just because they’re in a heart-shaped box!

Go on a date with yourself

You know what they say; you have to love yourself before anyone else can love you. If you’re usually not great at this, then Valentine’s Day is the time to practice. What would you like as a treat? Maybe you could take yourself out to dinner or to the cinema? Personally, I love going to the cinema alone. I take lots of snacks and no one is there to judge.

Buy yourself a gift

This could be anything; from a new book or pair of shoes to a treat like a haircut or massage. As long as it makes you feel good about yourself, buy it.

Celebrate your love for others

You may not currently have a partner, but I’m sure there are plenty of other people in your life that you love. Maybe use Valentine’s Day as an opportunity to call them or pay them a visit to let them know how important they are to you. Or, you know, just text them.

Do all the things you wouldn’t do if you had a partner

Stay in your pyjamas all day, watch back to back episodes of The Muppets, eat an entire chocolate orange – whatever it is that you love doing by yourself, do it on Valentine’s Day. Revel in it.
